Election of Lord Mayor at the AGM Dublin City Council
Tonight, Monday 27th June 2011 at 6.45pm Dublin City Councillors will assemble at City Hall to go through the fake ritual of electing a Lord Mayor and deputy Lord Mayor. This pseudo-sham process is a peculiar ritualistic robotic enactment of democracy as a corpse. What you citizens may not know and they don't want you to know is that the process of selection has already taken place by the majority parties who contaminate the democratic electoral process by turning it into a tool to suit their own ends. In fact, it is a process of 'exclusion'.
In a real democracy, it is my belief that the public would be informed at least 6 weeks beforehand that the process of electing the Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin, as first citizen of the City of Dublin and the Chair of Dublin City Council as well as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin City Council is now open to all Councillors and that the citizens could monitor and be informed by the event.
I believe also, that it is extremely wrong that this process would be coveted by the ruling majority political parties which leaves the Independent Councillors outside of what appears to be a monopoly process and in my opinion, undemocratic. All citizens have the right to see democracy in action and actualized before them. We are your servants, not self-servants, as would seem to be the case with the ruling elites at Dublin City Council. Beware of a certain cosiness and surety of power and privilege.
Labour it would appear will triumph tonight as the deal is done behind closed doors. Nevertheless it is my intention to either nominate myself for one or both positions or nominate one of my fellow independents. As a matter of fact, I would have no problem supporting any independent minded individual from either Sinn Fein, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael or Labour for that matter who would sign up to a process of declaring themselves six weeks in advance of any position where a vote of their peers would be needed. Tune in tonight for ground hog day. Here we go again, again, and again and again.
